I will change all your thoughts!

When a man leaves the family, it causes a stir. When a woman leaves the family, it is a scandal - inexcusable. Two equal actions, two different evaluations and social impacts. Seamstress Eva's and Mánek's love is forbidden due to her poor background. He is unable to stand up for her at the right time, so Eva out of spite marries the furrier Samek. Let everyone see that she did not lure Mánek to her. But love cannot be commanded; Eva and Mánek are still drawn to each other, they can't help it. They are tormented. So why not finally defy to "what should be done"? Especially when the whole village sees it. The village that watched them, evaluated them, gossiped about them. And if they can't start again here, they will start somewhere else... together and with a blessing.

Gabriela Preissová, while writing the drama Gazdina roba, created it from her novella of the same name. At the time, the author was not even thirty and she was definitely not prepared for the uproar that her non-idyllic portrayal of the countryside would cause. Eva's opinions and the strength she found in herself for her "reprehensible" actions acted like a detonator. Despite the attacks and criticisms, the story soon became one of the key dramas of Czech realistic creation, or rather of Czech drama in general, and belongs to the best theater plays that have ever been created in our country.

Kasha Jandáčková, one of the most outstanding theater directors of the young generation, will stage the play in her own adaptation for the Švanda Theatre. She cast young members of the Smíchov ensemble in most of the roles. Thanks to this, all prejudices and stereotypes of the usual interpretation of the canonical text of Czech drama are broken and attack not only the rigidity of thinking about the so-called realistic drama, but above all the rigidity of the social cause, thinking about the roles of men and women in society, about family relationships, about responsibility for their decisions against expectations. The fundamental shift in the view of the well-known drama is also reflected through the change of the original title - to the title The Landlord and the Woman, in which the name of one person is no longer derived from the name of another. There are two separate beings, completely equal, but only up to a certain point.

The production The Landlord and the Woman is another of the classic titles that the Švanda Theatre wants to see in a distinctive interpretation closely connected with themes that resonate in today's society. And we know very well that even in a quarter of the 21st century, equal rights are often not granted to men and women in "public opinion".

Kindly note that actors smoke on stage during the show.
