  • Kateřina Tučková and collective: Winton Cabaret (Kabaret Winton)

A powerful story of two sisters about searching for a home and their own blood despite history. For 8th/9th grade of elementary schools and secondary schools.

During the first eight months of 1939, Nicholas Winton and his colleagues transported 669 children from post-Munich Czechoslovakia. Winton stayed at the Hotel Šroubek on Wenceslas Square for less than a month before returning to Great Britain. Even from there, however, he continued to organize transports to England. All came to a halt after the outbreak of the Second World War. Although it was not obvious at the time, it is clear that Winton saved the lives of those 669 children. Their families usually ended in concentration camps. The children survived thanks to him. In other families, in other countries. And in the following decades all was forgotten.

It was not until the 1980s that the media began to draw attention to Nicholas Winton's story. Gradually stories of the so-called Winton children were revealed, most of whom never returned to their homeland after the war. There was no reason to, sometimes returning was not even an option. Six years is a long time in a child's life. In their homeland they were foreigners.

Ester was also sent to England by her parents who remained in Czechoslovakia together with their younger daughter Hana. They never saw each other again. Ester grew up with foster parents and now has an adult daughter of her own. And yet, one day in 1988, she decides to go to Czechoslovakia. To her surprise, she meets people she thought were long dead. Or is she simply being deceived by her memory and seeing what she wants to see? She is accompanied on her journey by her daughter, who uncovers her mother's story. Ester never wanted to share her story. Until now, in a strange hotel where, it seems, the laws of time and space do not apply.
